This is fantastic, thank you so much for your help in this matter. I am in the process of booking my flight to Lagos, as instructed; I have a hold on a reservation. Here are the details:

I leave Cleveland on Sunday the 15th, Delta flight 4097 to Atlanta, connecting to Delta 54 to Lagos. It arrives at 3:35 p.m. on Monday the 16th. Then I head back home on Saturday the 21st, also Delta flights, I leave Lagos at 10:20 p.m. and have to connect through both Amsterdam and then Detroit. It’s $1758 with taxes, but that’s a small price considering the transaction we’re talking about, right!

Now I have not been to Lagos before, and I haven’t had a vacation in several years, so I figured I’d combine business and pleasure. I’ve been reading the Fodors Nigeria book from the library, and have sketched out an itinerary. Please check it over and give me any suggestions you have. Hey, you’re the local, so I take your word on what the must-see things are!!

Monday: Arrive, transfer to hotel. Small lunch, stroll around Lagos business district, check out the Oba’s Palace and the Shrine of Fela.
Tuesday: I figured we could sign all the necessary paperwork in the morning, and then head to one of the nearby beaches in the early afternoon. I couldn’t find anything in the book or online as to whether there are any good snorkeling sites nearby, but if there are, that would be fantastic.
Wednesday: The Nigerian National Museum is in all the tourism guides, and I think it may be a highlight of the trip for me. Do you think I could do it in half a day, and then check out one of the shopping areas later? Or do I really need the whole day to do the museum justice?
Thursday: Today, I thought it would be interesting to take a ferry to one of the islands. Open to Ikoyi, Victoria or Iddo. Which do you think is the best one?
Friday: Free time for anything that I’ve missed. And I’d love to take you and Mrs. Wase out for dinner, to say thanks for all of your hospitality and driving me around. Not sure if you have any Longhorn Steaks or Outback Steakhouses there, but something along those lines would be nice.
Saturday: Maybe just rest by the pool and catch a short nap before my flight?

Also, will you be able to pick me up from the airport? Should I book a hotel room, or would it be okay if I bunk up with you? I’m cool either way!

I’m so sorry I was unable to get back to you earlier; I had to make an appointment for tomorrow with my podiatrist for an ingrown toenail that has been bothering the hell out of me the past few days. Seems like I was on the phone with the appointment desk half the day.

Actually, I had to go ahead and book that Delta flight right after I emailed you last night; I was mistaken that they would hold it for 24 hours, apparently that’s only the policy with domestic flights. But the arrival/departure times are exactly as I had sent you.

So excited, only four more days!!!!!!! Can’t wait to meet you and your family, I feel like we have become good friends and trusted associates over the past week or so.

I understand that it IS probably difficult to host me, especially if you have little ones at home (do you? I love kids!), but the Negeria Airport Hotel sounds lovely, thank you for the recommendation. By chance is it part of the Hilton family of hotels? Can’t ever get too many HHonors points, you know! If you could have your secretary request foam pillows and a city-view room, that would be grand. Any idea if there’s an exercise facility on premises?

Hi Wase –

It is with a heavy heart that I write to let you know that after seeing my podiatrist, Dr. Patas, he tells me that I am not supposed to fly at this time. My ingrown toenail has grown much worse, and he worries that the reduced air pressure on a commercial jet could possibly cause the infected area to explode. (And compounding things, I finally had a chance to look at Delta’s in-flight entertainment schedule for May, and I have to tell you—not impressed.)

He said the only way that he and the airline would give me clearance to travel would be for you to get a doctor there in Lagos (you could just use yours) to fill out/sign the attached medical release form (to ensure that I’d have a doctor there in case it gets worse on the flight). You could either fax it to me at my number or scan it in and email it. Then I have to physically take it to the airline counter and have it approved by them, kind of a pain!

I’m so sorry about this. If it’s too much of a burden on you, maybe we can get together later in the summer? Delta tells me that I can rebook for later on, as long as the origin and destination cities are the same.

Thank you for this, and thank you for your care and everlasting concern for me. But my difficult medical situation (to say nothing of the billing issues that are already starting to rear their ugly heads; you’d think that a $75 copay for a specialist is enough, but now they say that this technically qualifies as urgent care. Can you believe that?!!?) has really caused me to take a deep breath and look at my life anew.

Wasey, at the end of the day, what do we have in this big, crazy world but our health and our friends? I’ve learned through this whole exercise that money isn’t what’s important, love and respect and good looks are what people remember about us.

My focus moving forward is to stay connected with good friends. And I’m so lucky to have made a new one in you. I hope that our friendship lasts the test of time and doesn’t slowly devolve like so many college friendships do. You know, like when you move to Omaha and Henry stays in Auburn with your ex-girlfriend who he was always hitting on. A decade or two later, you feel like you hardly know him anymore—it’s hard to keep up with the string of divorces, rehab appearances, run-ins with the law, fake identities, dozens of cross-country moves and dental implants. And plenty has happened with Henry, too, like marrying that old flame and having a couple of kids.

I guess my point is that I am truly thankful for the gift of OUR friendship, which has blossomed in this endeavor. The money really doesn’t mean anything to me at this point.
